How can I receive Digital Antenna or Clear QAM cable channels in the US and Canada using EyeTV?

Recommended Posts

In the past, there were various EyeTV hardware devices that could receive Digital Antenna (ATSC) channels in the US and Canada.  They could also receive Unencrypted Digital Cable (Clear QAM).

Devices that could do this, like EyeTV Hybrid and EyeTV 250 Plus, are no longer manufactured or distributed.

The International version of EyeTV Hybrid will not work in the US or Canada.

If you would like to receive Digital Antenna (ATSC) or Unencrypted Digital Cable (Clear QAM) via a coaxial connection, then SiliconDustoffers the HDHomeRun DUAL (Generation 4 or earlier) or the HDHomeRun Connect:

Channels

Digital Antenna (ATSC) offers a number of channels in most major TV markets, including both HD and SD content.

Unencrypted Digital Cable (Clear QAM) is usually only a few channels, and definitely not your whole cable lineup.  In the past, more channels were available over that standard, but cable companies have been increasingly forcing users to use a cable box to receive channels.

The HDHomeRun DUAL and HDHomeRun Connect have two tuners – you can receive two antenna channels at the same time, or two cable channels, but not a mixture of both.

Please Note: The HDHomeRun DUAL or HDHomeRun Connect can’t receive any analog signals, and can’t work with a cable box.

EyeTV 3 Software

You can use the HDHomeRun DUAL or HDHomeRun Connect on your Mac with EyeTV 3 software, which is a separate purchase direct from Elgato via our Online Store.

If you already own a full version of EyeTV 3, then you can use your existing activation key with the HDHomeRun DUAL or HDHomeRun Connect

Please Note: EyeTV 3 supports the HDHomeRun DUALor HDHomeRun Connect, but not other HDHomeRun units.  EyeTV 3supports the North American version of these products.

Connection To The Mac

The HDHomeRun DUAL or HDHomeRun Connect will connect to your network via Ethernet. You could connect them to a Wi-Fi router via an Ethernet cable, if you like. Then the signal could be sent to your Mac, and EyeTV, via Wi-Fi.

You can also connect the HDHomeRun DUAL or HDHomeRun Connect directly to your Mac via Ethernet, if your Mac has auto-negotiating Ethernet ports.  Macs made in the past few years have such ports.

Regional Program Guide

EyeTV 3 software offers a Program Guide using TV Guide data, but only in the US and Canada.
