  1. Handbrake 1.7.0 and EyeTV 4

Just a heads-up, the latest version of Handbrake (1.7.0) doesn't automatically see the audio track in recordings made by EyeTV4. The developer says "Eyetv packages are folders that contain multiple files, the code to open files was rewritten and I didn't test it properly with these packages. As a workaround until the next snapshot or release, you can select the correct title from the titles popup button.". This will be fixed in the next release of Handbrake.

Yes, I’ve just checked and mine’s the same: thumbnails on SD, missing on HD. My set up is with Elgato freesat tuner, so it’s not unique to your set up. Does your playback on HD play smoothly?

No, I get stuttering too. I have reported this to Support, and sent them samples, they are looking into it. Useful to at least know that the problem is not specific to one type of hardware.

  3. Can anyone running 8524 confirm that they are seeing the thumbnails in editing mode of HD recordings? It appears fine here with SD recordings, just not HD. However, if I turn System Integrity Protection off, the thumbnails appear as they should in the HD recordings (obviously I'm not going to leave SIP off for security reasons). Also, as I'm in the UK, my TV programmes come through via Freeview (to an HDHomeRun), I'm wondering if this is an issue specific to this setup.

I was very happy with 8523 until yesterday, when suddenly, the two main problems I had with 8521 returned: the thumbnails have disappeared from the editing window, and playback of HD programmes is once again jerky. Reverting to version 8519 resolves both of these issues, but of course also has the earlier clunky method of editing.

Update to the above: the issues go away if System Integrity Protection is disabled. Which obviously I'm not going to do on a permanent basis.

Most things seem to work, but no fast forward/reverse arrows down near the stop/go symbols in the live window. They were handy. The the work-around is to activate the editing time line and drag the editing head to and fro.

Fast forward and reverse are still available from the "Controls" menu, or using the keyboard controls Command + Right/Left.

If you're not on Catalina, then stick to EyeTV 3, it's a mature product that works well. EyeTV 4, on the other hand, like the recent Presidential Debate, is a s**tshow. It behaves like an early beta, and the developers show no sign of any interest in making it better.

Okay, well a week later: now that Build 8523 has been released, it actually seems to be working okay! Editing has pretty much reverted to how it was in EyeTV 3, the thumbnails are showing up okay in the editing timeline, and it seems to work like it should. There are now at last more export options, and the picture no longer stutters. Other than two "View" items in the menubar, and the fact that once you start exporting an item you can't stop it without quitting the app, for the first time it actually feels like a finished product. (Note: I'm in the UK, using an HDHomeRun Connect.)
